Hydra-Cell Coolant Pump Advantages for High Pressure Machine Tool Cooling

MachineTool2Speeds, feeds and efficiencies can be improved with the use of high pressure recycled coolant. Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps have been pumping recycled coolant successfully for many years. Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps are efficient high pressure pumps which are designed to pump fluids which are contaminated by particles from machining. Particles to 250 micron in diameter can be easily pumped with Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps, eliminating the expense of fine filtration required by other positive displacement, centrifugal, screw or piston pumps.

Unlike these other pumps, Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps do not rely on the fluid being pumped to provide lubricant between surfaces which ride on each other. Therefore, Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps are the ideal pump for pumping this abrasive recycled fluid.

Grinding

Grinding

Problem:

In high speed production grinding, coolant must be pumped to provide cooling and flushing of the contact area of the grinding wheel and the work piece. The coolant must be pumped at a velocity greater than the speed of the wheel to penetrate the vapor barrier created by the superheated steam. Also, high pressure coolant should be pumped onto the surface of the grinding wheel to clean the wheel and improve production.

The coolant often contains particles of the work piece as well as particles which have been worked free from the grinding wheel. Fine filtration for the coolant is a cumbersome and expensive process. Conventional centrifugal, screw or piston pumps have trouble pumping this recycled fluid.

Solution:
Hydra-Cell coolant pumps are ideal for abrasive, recycled coolant!

MillingMilling

Problem:

High pressure coolant in mills and machining centers provides better cooling, increased tool life, reduced friction, and improved surface finishes. High pressure coolant removes chips from the work process and reduces the problems associated with recutting of chips.

High pressure coolant can penetrate the vapor barrier created when traditional coolant systems allow the coolant to boil at the work area. The only practical coolant application system requires recycling of the coolant. Unfortunately, most traditional high pressure positive displacement pumps require that the coolant being pumped be filtered down to less than 5 micron. This fine filtration is expensive, cumbersome and high maintenance.

Solution:
Hydra-Cell coolant pumps can handle 250 micron particles!

Turning

Turning and Threading

Problem:

Today, most lathes can greatly increase the metal removal rate with high pressure coolant. High pressure coolant reduces thermal shock and the premature tool failure that comes from it. The vapor barrier which forms when coolant boils from the heat generated from the tool and the work piece, can be penetrated with high pressure. The coolant used in these high pressure applications can be recycled, however, most conventional positive displacement high pressure coolant pumps require very clean fluids, thus requiring expensive and cumbersome filtration.

Solution:
Hydra-Cell coolant pumps can handle dirty, recycled coolant!

Deep Hole Drilling
DeepHoleDrilling

Problem:
In deep hole drilling, coolant must be pumped to the end of the drill in order to cool the bit, flush the chips, reduce deflection of the tool and maintain tolerances. The recycled coolant contains many particles from the drilling process. Filtering the coolant sufficiently for most other centrifugal, screw or piston pumps can be expensive and cumbersome.

Hydra-Cell® Coolant Pump Advantages

The seal-less nature of the Hydra-Cell ® coolant pumps enable charged and dirty liquids to be processed without need for fine filtration to protect the coolant pump.

The Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps need little maintenance and can operate at continuous duty at high pressure.

Pulsation is low, so dampeners may not be required for most Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps.

Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps can handle solids up to 500 microns, or more. They can be pumped without fine filtration. System costs are reduced and maintenance is simplified.

Most coolant pumps in the Hydra-Cell® pump range can operate at any pressure from <1 bar up to at least 70 bar. Some models up to 170 bar.

Seal-less design distinguishes the Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps from other coolant pumps and is the basis of its long service life - many of the liquids pumped are harmful to pump seals. The Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps are tolerant of small solids, resistant to chemical and corrosive attack.

Energy savings. Compact and highly efficient (80-85%), a Hydra-Cell® coolant pumps can be fitted with a smaller motor than would be required by many much bigger coolant pumps for equivalent flows and pressures.
